I’ve been asked this question before. “Which is better? Roundabouts or traffic signals?” The answer is “both.” It depends entirely upon the intersection. Every intersection has unique characteristics which dictate the best type of traffic control and design parameters. Sometimes the traffic signal is the better choice and sometimes the roundabout is better. It’s all about balancing the needs of the community with: safety, traffic flow, bikes/peds, peak hour traffic characteristics, 12-hour traffic volumes, cost, and driver expectations. The following image is a current KE project at a proposed roundabout intersection where the roundabout was the better choice.
